Last night, when I stepped into my schools restaurant (where I work), I was hypnotized by a hard core metal track. I had not been a fan of rock or I doubt that Ill ever be but then I have planned to explore rocks wilderness. This post will seem to be kinda weird since I always write about Tamil rap and mostly review on tamil rappers but lets call it quits for this post alone. The band’s name is Korpiklaani and as by wiki, “Korpiklaani is a folk metal band from Finland who are formerly known as Shaman. The name Korpiklaani means "Forest Clan" in the Finnish language.” Their bio states that they started off with folk before turning to rock while most bands started with rock and then fused it with folk.

Their first commercial album was released in 2003 and since then, they have lived up to it. Putting their albums into chronological order: Spirit of the Forest (2003), Voice of Wilderness (2005), Tales Along This Road (2006), Tervaskanto (2007), Korven Kuningas (2008), Karkelo (2009).

When the track started rolling, I had very little hope that it will make here at Yogib blog but then it started selling itself in its own way. It feels like as if you are hearing to a Tamil version of Eminem’s Mocking bird..well.. the story is different here. Either ways, it’s about a kid isolated with faint hope and love.

I have become a crazy psycho fan of Psychomantra now. I’m pretty sure that you guys will not regret reading this post at all. Thanks to Yogib’s tamil rap, I believe that his work has motivated other tamil rappers to a great extent. Psychomantra--Tamil hip hop

I have been off the blogospher radar for a while now and its time that I get back on the saddle. Tamil hip hop started its massive launch with Yogib & gang and over the years, there has been a dramatic increase in folks with simillar interests. This time, its the Psychomantra. Although this guy seems to be doing a great job, I would certainly not compare him with Yogi. In one his interviews, they had asked him why the name Psychomantra and his reply was quite a tale. I have included his interviews here, so do watch it and tell me what you think about him.

In the above clip, youll find his buddy with a Psychomantra solo (@ 0.40)..great. All of Psychomantra's numbers are mind blowing but for me, Iam very much impressed by two of his creations, one is "Yenna solla pogirai" and the other one which is a remix for Rajnikanths "Shivaji". Few months back i chanced on a budding artist's tamil rap clip.His names is suresh da wun.His first few remix raps were not that impressive and i believe that it was due to the poor setup and the package.The songs were good though and my instincts told me that he is gonna make it big sometime.
All his first makes hosted at youtube were filled with 20% nice and the rest were slandering.Most of the viewers at youtube kept commeting with a bad intension on his tracks but his perseverence kept him on the move.Lately he has come up with a proper video clip and the track is good too.Let me begin with my review on his latest one.The first 1 minute is poorly edited,he could have cut down or lowered the echo(anyway that is his style).If he had to be lowering the echo and making his voice more hearable iam sure it would have turned out very well... but hey wateva the song is good.

You will know him much better as Yogi B.After the breakdown of Poetic Ammo and the failure of their last album, Return of the Boombox with remaining member, Point Blanc (Nicholas Ong Chong Quan), Yogi B has now found yet another bowl of rice - rap duo Natchatra.Sporting a perfect oval of sandhanam (sandalwood paste) and kumkum (red dot) on his forehead ("I could never show this side of me when I was with Ammo"), Yogi struts into the interview room, his soldiers in tow, looking very much like models of The Source (a US hip- hop magazine)."Ready to fight the scene?" I asked."Hell yeah!" came the yell after a two-second pause. Smoothing out the creases on the new blue cloth-covered office chair, Yogi finally finds a comfortable spot for his big frame.With him is Natchatra (comprising Dr Burn a.k.a. Ruban Manoharan and Emcee Jesz a.k.a. Sujesh Sambasivam). Trusted friend Mogethen Gowrisan, who is also involved in the production of Yogi's latest venture, makes up the party.I ask about Yogi B's new Tamil rap album, Vallavan.

A long-awaited event since 1996, when Ammo's song Vallavan got fans talking like it was the next Kuch Kuch Hota Hai."Been thinking about it (the album) for ages. I was supposed to do it with a couple of Ammo dancers. Things didn't work out till I found the right people," said Yogi.And that to him is Natchatra which was founded three years ago. Burn was producing for local Tamil pop-rock band Lock Up when one of its band members recommended him to Yogi."I heard his stuff and knew he was in," said Yogi.This got Burn pushing up his baseball cap, waking up from a slouch and silencing his handphone to say: "I did a lot of underground stuff for local Tamil groups. Also rapped for gigs here and there whenever I could," said the 25-year-old in a mix of Tamil and English."When Yogi approached me to help produce a Tamil rap album, I jumped at the idea. "Later, when I met Jesz, who was deejaying at a club in Bukit Bintang, I knew the triangle was completed." Tightening the band around his long thin ponytail, Jesz said he had always been an Ammo fan."Come on, who would say no to him (Yogi). It's an honour," added 24-year-old Jesz, nabbing my copy of Yogi's first single with Poetic Ammunition, a duo he formed before Ammo's days."I want that," yelped Yogi, grabbing it from Jesz."Amma (mother) gave everything away. I don't have a copy anymore."Gosh!" said Yogi as he stared at the cassette, ripping it apart to look at its inlay.

"I must have put on at least 30kgs since (this picture was taken in 1994)."I've been through a lot of shit in the industry. Music is in me, I even hear a beat when I'm quiet. It's just so unfortunate that I've had to pave the path myself on this road I travelled. "With Ammo, I had to understand the market." Poetic Ammo fans were mainly Malay. "I couldn't be as Indian as I really am but it's cool."But "Vallavan is very true to what I am". "It portrays the real me, completely," said Yogi, smiling as he admired the cassette in his hands. The real Yogi from Taman Maluri in Cheras is a temple-going, mother-loving homebody. Vallavan has 15 songs, all produced by Yogi and Natchatra, with Mogethen providing the carnatic vocals and violin music.Also featured are Prema (Yogi's sister), carnatic singers Bhavani Logeswaran and Premkumar Sokalingam, Temple of Fine Arts' Jyotsna Prakash, some of Lock Up members and keyboardist K.S. Amigoz.

Vallavan even has two temple priests on one of the tracks.Hip Hop Era and Madai Thiranthu, the first two singles, are on heavy rotation on local radio station THR Raaga but Vali Theduthe is one you will remember. It is a song full of rage. Yogi said the song was about a real-life experience where he and Natchatra were cheated.

"I'm glad to be back. But if 'this' doesn't work out, I'm out of ideas."

After listening to the album, take it from me, although the beats are a little old-school, it is lyrically strong. And Vali Theduthe is sure to take Yogi and Natchatra back into the studios for a second album.

To me, malaysian music has always been the likes of “Goyang, Goyang” or “Akka Magai”. not that there’s anything wrong with that (memories have been attached to such songs which is a different post altogether). then i got to know that they have a tamil rnb/hip hop/rap scene as well, but it didnt appeal to me. recently however, i got to know about a new album, by Yogi B (of Poetic Ammo fame) and Natchthraz (Emcee Jesz and Dr Burn), VALLAVAN.

At the risk of sounding like a groupie: Yogi B and Natchathraz RAWK!!

I’d listened to Poetic Ammo’s Vallavan, a single from 1997, and i was impressed. A friend forwarded my attention to a video on youtube. The tune of that song, “Madai Thiranthu” travelled through my ears and etched itself in my brain. i was hooked. the talents of these guys amaze me. what’s more interesting is the apparent enmity that these guys have with another hip hop/rnb/rap group Chakrasonic. it seems to me that the hostilities are comparable to the east side/west side conflict that tupac and notorious BIG had when they were alive. as another friend had said recently, this would make an interesting documentary subject. I’m not an expert when it comes to music arranging, composing or mixing. but as an avid listener its important that i’m able to hear the various layers in the songs. VALLAVAN does just that. their words are audible; i can UNDERSTAND every word of their lyrics.

Vallavan has 15 tracks, of which i love 11.

Vazhi Theduthe - “Nethu molaicha sedigal ellam arasa maram pole vaazha thudikkithu/ennaiye pagaicha ethirigal ellam ennai velle vazhi theduthu theduthu”. fantastic! dissing at its very best. furthermore, its in TAMIL. they do it with such class. (i need to add here that Chakrasonic has a rebuttal track on their new album, and well, its crude and crass. the language at its worst. talking about skin problems (sori), transvestites etc just not comparable to the tamil idioms used by the Vallavan guys). The song ends with a bang, with the sounds of the sangu, and digging out a grave.

Indian Girl - “salangai oliyil mukuthi azhagi with black indian curls”. love the way they’ve described the indian girl. the best part of this song has to be the rendition of “adi aathadi”. sensual singing. foot-tapping number. easily the most popular track on the album.

Kamasutra - “mmm…nee vantha vaadi..aaah if you wanna get freaaky with me”. Mogethan, i’d get freaky with you any day with a voice like that. Hypnotising tunes. He sings like the singer of “Kumari” in Anniyan, only tons sexier. lap-dance material.

Madai Thiranthu - Featuring Lock Up Guna. Super. Fantastic. Excellent. Balle. interesting remix. its using a popular tamil song from the 80s, but still manages to sound new and refreshing. the aalabanai at the end of the song..WOW.

Mov Dat - Makkei Crunk. “asathu! like the naattu sarakku!”. “adiyeh chinna ponnu, kadi vaalam podu kannu, kannamoochi aadu kannu”. this is hip hop mixed with indian beats (urumi and udukkai), all you want to do is mov dat. booty shaking track.

Kaathal Yenghe - “penne en manathil kaayam, ellam nee seithe paavam”. violin in this track is sombre, the strings are the only tunes one would hear when they hear the song for the first time. they tug at your heart.

Siva Siva - devotion with a difference. i even learnt a few things about hinduism from the song. Prema’s “Siva Suva” is excellent. Note: I never thought such unconventional devotional songs could be as appealing.

Vaa Vaa - thamilan beat with a difference. one of those head banging sort of songs. “raasi, nalle raasithaan, yogi b and natchathraz..orey paattu,uruttal mettu”. “ENGU- BISH”. hahaha. cute little bad takes at the end.

Hip Hop - “thamizh sollisaiyin hip hop era”. i see this track being performed as a fusion dance (bharatham and hip hop), like a cross between Om Kar and Tridiac Dancers. the carnatic vocals to “Kavithai gundargal” was mind blowing! it truly is the hip hop era for tamil local music.

Ellamey Kaasu and Vallavan - remakes of older tracks from Poetic Ammo. enjoyed them.
Having said that, i have but one grouse: the pronounciation of the letter “zha”. truthfully, i’ve heard worst. but if these people want to be recognised internationally, knowing how to use idioms is not enough, the enunciation of the words and letters are on par with the rhythm, beat and tune of a song.

Poetic Ammo

Poetic Ammo (also known as PMO) is a Malaysian rap/hip-hop group. The group consists of Yogeswaran Veerasingam a.k.a Yogi B, Chandrakumar Balakrishnan a.k.a Land Slyde, Nicholas Ong a.k.a Point Blanc and Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan a.k.a C.Loco. Most of their songs are in English but they have also released tracks in Bahasa Melayu, Tamil, and Cantonese

Beginning

The group was founded by Yogi B in 1990. The original members of Poetic Ammo were Yogi B and Anand and they were formerly known as DEFX. They become popular amongst local clubs and pubs such as Piccadilly, Canton City, Party Box and many more in Petaling Jaya. The first single they released with Kenny Music (Kenny Remy Martin) was "Run" and "Only You", released under Positive Tone.

Anand later left DEFX and set up another underground rap group with Pac Amoo Tha (also known as Jason), and they called themselves THA 2.O with a music style of hardcore rap with g-funk style. Anand was the rapper and Jason the turntablist in the band. Their shows were arranged by Siva Saga Entertainment. Anand left the group after he married Sherina. Jason continued solo. More collabrations with MC XL (Mara) on Unwanted FBI and Da effect g's squad with Jerald came later. A collaboration with Wreck Law was never released due to censorship issues.

Height and Achievements

Their first album entitled "It's nice day to be alive" beat the highest sales in the Malaysian hip-hop chart at that time. This was followed by their second album entitled "The World is Yours".

Yogi B gave the main ideas in composing music, lyrics and videoclips for their album. Their third album was entitled "Return of Boombox". The band has won numerous awards including the "Best English Album" award in the Malaysian Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM)(Music Awards) 1999, and the "Best Music Video" awards in the AIM 2000.
